Character Information: https://centaurworld.fandom.com/wiki/Rider
Personality: Rider is a dedicated soldier in the human army who is willing to do almost anything if it will help end the war against the minotaurs. When sent on a dangerous solo mission to retrieve an artifact that may turn the tides, she goes without question, journeying across the ravaged countryside with only her warhorse for company. Later, despite being forbidden to do so by the General, she sneaks into the Nowhere King’s stronghold alone, trying to retrieve the completed artifact. Throwing herself into such deadly quests speaks to both bravery and martyrdom on her part, though she does have the fighting skills to back it up. These are not suicide missions, she fully intends to succeed. She isn’t single-minded, however; when she spots an ally in mortal peril, she abandons her original goals to step in and help. Saving a life is more important than retrieving a mcguffin no matter how useful it may be. Once said friend is safe, however, Rider’s completely willing to throw herself back into danger, only dissuaded when it’s explained her recklessness may put others in danger later, especially Horse.
Despite being a soldier in a brutal war, Rider’s shown to be very caring. She’s incredibly soft with her horse, moreso than an average soldier may treat their steed. When they discover Rider’s village burned to the ground, after a moment of obvious terror and grief, Rider’s first concern is soothing her upset horse with a gentle lullaby. It’s implied that, while Horse spent Season 1 questing to find a way home to her, Rider went on her own quest trying to track Horse down. During their reunion, Rider doesn’t recognize Horse at first due to her drastically changed appearance. Horse sings the lullaby Rider used to soothe her, and Rider sprints to hug her the instant it clicks. They both claim the other is their closest family, especially after losing whoever else they may have had before to the war. During their separation in Season 2, when Rider requires the use of a different horse, she is very quick to correct anyone who comments - Becky Apples is not her horse. And when she talks wistfully about when the war is over, it's simply a peaceful life of joyous adventure together that she wants.
While Horse is Rider’s most important connection, she isn’t the only person Rider cares for or is gentle with - Rider goes out of her way to be kind often, even when it’s difficult or dangerous. She’s a bit awkward - spending your entire life in a war means casual socializing doesn’t come easily - but she’s friendly and optimistic, trying her best to adapt and make new friends as opportunities arise. When she thinks she’s being insulted by a stablehand during a moment of anxiety, she snaps back at him at first, then regrets it immediately when he apologizes. She responds with some genuine empathy and advice to try to help him ascend the ranks. As mentioned, she puts herself in danger and abandons her original mission to save the life of a centaur ally she barely knows. Even when she’s mugged by bandits in the forest, she tries multiple times to get through to them verbally before resorting to violence, and even then, it’s only enough to buy her a chance to get herself untied - she uses her sword to intimidate them but never actually moves to use it. She stresses that fellow humans shouldn’t be turning against each other even when times are tough, they should be banding together and supporting each other against their common monstrous enemies.
Her fighting style is flashy, and she’s taught her horse several tricks. Some of it definitely gives an edge in combat, but Rider clearly enjoys showing off even in life or death situations. That said, she can also be ruthlessly direct - when faced with a frozen minotaur army, Rider immediately begins instructing the much more nonviolent centaurs to start “lopping off heads and limbs” down the line. When one objects, literally stating that’s a war crime since their enemies are unable to fight back, Rider is irritated - she doesn’t understand why they would prefer to try and imprison these extremely deadly enemies rather than kill them and be sure the problem is solved. That said, she goes along with her allies’ plan, even when they explicitly say it’s mostly because they would feel bad doing anything worse. Their emotional well-being is important enough, and she also understands that they simply are not able to follow through on something more violent. It’s more efficient to work alongside them than fight them on the choice.
The only time Rider and Horse ever stumble is when Horse insists the only way to end the war is to kill the General - when Rider's two loyalties are in conflict. Horse is panicked and doesn't have time to explain any reasoning behind this, and as their leader, Rider's been trained to trust in the General almost unquestionably - he's even been personally mentoring her by this point. Being told he's the root cause of the war by the person (Horse) she trusts and loves most is something she can't reconcile. Even then, rather than pick one over the other, Rider tries to go for a third option of trying to personally kill the Nowhere King - she would prefer to face down a giant monster herself than be forced to fight or hurt either of her important connections.
